The behaviour of our children in schools is a favourite topic of discussion amongst parents, teachers, professional associations, local and national governments, and the media. Attention-grabbing newspaper headlines appear quick to lay blame and reluctant to let facts get in the way of a good story. At the centre of this are teachers trying to support ever-increasing behavioural needs in a landscape of ever-decreasing resources to support. This topical ASPE Ignite session promises no magic wands or additional staffing. Nor does it offer you tips and tricks that might help in one context but fail in hundreds of others. Instead, Nova shares stories from her 30-year career in education and offers some insights from her doctoral research that explores what is known about teachers who are adept at supporting children who display distressed behaviour. There will be opportunities to listen and to discuss, in a space that apportions no blame but instead seeks to celebrate what we know and might learn from.
